Problems in Playland
2002
steel, fiberglass, newspaper, polyurathane
10 ft wide v 6 ft tall
After this piece was shown, I was never again invited back to the Exposed Suclpture Show!

Hardly a feel-good work, it was made from discarded fast-food playground equipment as I brooded over our tendency to mask pressing issues with with superficial rubbish. In this case, I referred to child hunger, poor schools, and indoctrination of all sorts.

Obscured with a crusty surface of paper-mache made from newspapers and the stock reports, all sprinkled with hideous red mulch, the formerly jolly carousel creatures looked unbelievably grim. Adding insult to injury, a mess of wire made the thing impossible to ride. Problems in playland, indeed.
