Exposed Sculpture Exhibit, Helen Day Art Center, Stowe, Vermont

There is controversy about building prisons in Vermont as a repository for felons from other states, typically more violent and angry than our own. Since, in my view, the prison system damages everyone involved, the costs are significant and require a re-framing of our perceptions of our rural landscape.

Here the bucolic Stowe Valley is seen through bars and barbed wire, framed by rusted steel. The frame is lined by paintings of electric chairs and the faces of men saved from death row by DNA testing. The opposite edge is painted with faces of compassion.
